Symptomatic Hypermobility in Children: The Silent Superpower

Written by Alicia Parker

Some children seem naturally bendy—able to twist, stretch, and move their joints in ways others can't. While this can seem like a fun party trick or a talent for dance and gymnastics, it's not always harmless. For some children, this flexibility comes with joint/muscle pain, fatigue/muscle weakness and difficulty with movement. This is known as Symptomatic Hypermobility (symptoms of the bendy-ness).

Children with this condition often go unnoticed. They might tire easily, struggle with coordination, or frequently complain of "growing pains." Unfortunately, their symptoms are often misunderstood, and many go without the support they need.

As a paediatric physiotherapist, I work with children to turn this hidden challenge into a strength. With the right support—strengthening, coordination training, and education—these children can thrive.

Does your child tire easily, avoid sports, or complain of frequent aches and pains?
It could be more than just growing up.
